Ventilation structures were constructed by pneumatic caisson method. Unusually wide
box section for steel shell construction. Structural requirements were mainly determined
by earthquake design loads.
Steel shell was constructed
in a shipyard.
The two survey alignment towers, and various equipment
needed for placing the elements, were installed at the
outfitting pier.
Severe earthquake loading requirements.
Element was supported from catamaran barges and ballasted with gravel loaded on the
element.
Rigid joint with single
rubber gasket.
Continuous steel shell around reinforced concrete box structure.
Screeded gravel bed and cement mortar grout into vinyl sacks.
1.0 m of riprap was used as protection against ships’ anchors.
1.10 for earthquake; 1.20 for normal conditions
